Pakistan Floods 2011

The Sindh province of Pakistan has again been hit by widespread flooding, affecting around 5 million people, damaging 700,000 homes and devastating more than 1.7 million acres of crops. The death toll is approaching 200.

Food, potable water, shelter, and health care are urgently needed to save lives that are greatly at risk from waterborne diseases, malnutrition, and food insecurity. Many areas inundated by the heavy monsoonal rains remain inaccessible.

Around 131,000 people are now residing in 1,484 camps, but the majority of the population is without access to shelter, food, medicines, and clean drinking water. Food and drinking water were already in short supply in rural Sindh, and the floods have drastically worsened the situation.

Agriculture and livestock provide the majority of income in the province. With these widely destroyed, families are without economic resources and income earning opportunities to purchase food. Inadequate access to health facilities adds to the concerns for waterborne diseases and nutrition deficiency.

Anglicord is working with ACT Alliance, a global alliance of over 100 church and church related agencies, to raise money for this crisis. ACT Alliance partners are distributing food and non food items, bottled water, emergency shelter and mobile health units. ACT Alliance partner
Christian Aid has remained in the Sindh province since the 2010 floods, and will continue to work to a recovery response, focusing on housing.

Anglicord is a member of the ACT Alliance, an alliance of 111 churches and church-related organisations that work together in humanitarian assistance, advocacy and development.
