Ethiopia
Ethiopia has been severely affected by the drought and famine, compounded in the Afar region by volcanic eruptions which contaminated remaining water supplies. People are severely malnourished, and pregnant women and children are weakened and are particularly vulnerable to disease. Anglicord’s relief and recovery work has focused here, where it has a long standing relationship through Australian midwife Val Browning.
"It takes ten goats to bring a family up off its knees"
Anglicord’s partners’ short term program of support covers shelter, household utensils and secured food and water for displaced people; animal treatment, supplementary animal feed; nutrition support, disease surveillance and prevention. Longer term, Val Browning says that they will assist with reconstructing dams and cisterns, goat restocking and promoting alternative ways for families to earn an income.
"It takes ten goats to bring a family up of its knees," says Val.

Somalia
Anglicord has been running an appeal since July to assist its partners in East Africa to deal with the devastating effects of drought and famine, and the need for assistance remains acute.
The current emergency focus with the ACT Alliance is on Somali refugees both in Mogadishu and neighbouring Kenya, who require ongoing support to access food, clean water, shelter and medical supplies.
The price of food continues to rise, and aid agencies are experiencing a shortage of space to house those needing care. Heavy rains in October brought the added threat of Malaria and other water-borne diseases.
So far, emergency assistance has been provided to over 900,000 people in Somalia.
