Michael Smitheram: new CEO

AngliCORD’s President, Dr Philip Freier, has welcomed the appointment of Michael Smitheram as the new CEO of AngliCORD.

“As President of AngliCORD, I am delighted to welcome Michael to this important role, to implement a Christian vision of compassionate partnership with people who don’t yet share in the standard of living that many Australians enjoy,” said Dr Philip Freier, who is the Archbishop of Melbourne.

“Michael will bring valuable experience to AngliCORD, as the agency supports partners in developing countries to make a real difference in vulnerable communities, and works to inspire us as Australians to be concerned and responsible global citizens.”

Michael Smitheram has qualifications in Politics and Economics, and more than 20 years experience in the overseas aid and development sector, most recently as the International Coordinator of Micah Challenge, the global Christian campaign against poverty.

Michael has previously worked with Oxfam Australia in Australia and Ethiopia, and in various roles with AusAID including Country Manager (Education) for Papua New Guinea. Michael also has policy and research experience, having contributed to national policy consultations in roles with ACFID, and coordinated campaigns addressing Australian Government policy on global poverty, low income housing and the environment.

Michael is an active member of the Canberra Baptist Church, and through Micah Challenge has worked closely with Anglican churches and organisations around the world. Michael will take up the appointment in Melbourne on June 2nd, following the retirement from AngliCORD of Greg Thompson.
