When is a sausage worth $1000?

When is a sausage worth $1000?

The community of Kyneton was moved by what it saw in the news about the record-breaking drought and subsequent famine in East Africa, and they came up with a novel way to raise money to help.

The community of Kyneton was moved by what it saw in the news about the record-breaking drought and subsequent famine in East Africa. The combined faith communities of the local Anglican, Roman Catholic, Baptist and Uniting Churches decided on a novel way to simultaneously raise funds and awareness of the issue of food security – a virtual food auction.

Children from the community devised the menu, items from which were auctioned off by local auctioneer Kieran McGrath on August 28. In return for their money, bidders received a handful of dust – a potent symbol of the hardship currently faced by millions in East Africa.

100% of the proceeds – over $15,000 - were donated to Anglicord’s East Africa appeal.

“The response was staggering,” said Fr Tony White, vicar of the Anglican Parish of St Paul’s, Kyneton. “One woman paid $1000 for a sausage!” Everything from a peanut butter sandwich to a falafel was knocked down for amounts usually well in excess of $100.

As well as the auction, the four churches organised a silent auction, a raffle, jam sales and a sausage sizzle in St Paul’s Park.

Ruth Murphy, one of the organisers, said that she “completely overwhelmed and delighted with the result”.
