Government urged to support "Robin Hood Tax"
Anglicord has joined a long and diverse list of organisations urging the Australian government to support a financial transactions tax initiative (colloquially called the "Robin Hood Tax") at the G20 meeting this year.
CEO Misha Coleman has added her voice to the group who believe the FTT is a vital step towards ensuring sufficient international economic reform, in order to avoid another global financial crisis (GFC).
The organisations involved have written to Prime Minister Julia Gillard, pointing out that the burden of the GFC is being borne globally by the most vulnerable, through cutbacks in wages for civil servants, pensions, vital public services, labour demands and international aid programs.
"As nations seek to provide for citizens and avoid another devastating financial crisis, we need action now to raise funds for real social needs in developed and developing countries, and to reduce speculation," the signatories to the letter say.
The campaign's supporters include trade unions groups, environmentalists, and overseas aid organisations.
