Support: Mission Middle East

You can support the people of the Middle East who are facing a “crisis of human dignity”.

By donating to AngliCORD’s Mission Middle East appeal you can help provide health care for people living in desperate circumstances.

AngliCORD is appealing for support for partners providing health care to people facing a ‘crisis of human dignity’ in the Middle East,” says Misha Coleman, AngliCORD’s CEO.

“We are blessed to be a bridge between generous Australians and partners who are making a life-saving difference for some of the poorest people in the region,” Ms Coleman says.

The appeal

The appeal, which is being run by AngliCORD, was launched by Archbishop Freier to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the death of David Penman, the founder of AngliCORD. The appeal also coincides with the agency's 21st birthday.

The appeal launch comes after the United Nations (UN) revealed that the people of Gaza are trapped in a “crisis of human dignity”.

Over the past two years, Israel’s blockade of Gaza has devastated livelihoods, driven up food prices, cut fuel supplies and reduced water supplies, the UN said in a new report.

Locked In: The Humanitarian Impact of Two Years of Blockade on the Gaza Strip, released by the UN in August, paints a grim picture of life for the 1.5 million people who call the Gaza Strip home.

Al Ahli Arab Hospital

For Suhaila Tarazi, Director of the Anglican Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza City, the courage to continue in such desperate circumstances comes from the knowledge that people beyond Gaza – including Australian Anglicans – care enough to offer their support.

“The support from our overseas partners, including AngliCORD, helps Al Ahli sustain quality medical care to the poor,” Suhaila says.

For more than 20 years Suhaila and Al Ahli Hospital have relied on the faithful commitment and support of many people, including Australian Anglicans through AngliCORD.

In the past five years alone, Australians have donated more than $440,000 towards Al Ahli Hospital through AngliCORD. This support helps the hospital to offer quality medical care free of charge to thousands of people every month.

The Penman Clinic

AngliCORD also supports the Penman Clinic, which was opened in 1992 in the predominantly Christian village of Zababdeh, in memory of the late Archbishop of Melbourne David Penman.

The clinic is an important primary care centre in the relatively rural area, with a permanent generalist doctor, nurse, small laboratory, dental services, pharmacy, and visiting specialists doctors.

It is also a very practical and active symbol of Christian compassion, providing care to all 60,000 people living in the surrounding area, regardless of their faith.
